History
of the Mill |
|
In 1840 the mill at
the base of the waterfall in Wolffork valley was
constructed. It was built with timbers from
the valley, mostly wormy chestnut. All the
timbers were hand hewn and connected with pegs, not
nails. The original wheel was constructed of
wood and was about 14 feet in diameter. The
original mill utilized the height of the waterfall
to create an energy source that was powered by an
overshot wheel. This type of power allowed the
mill to be built far enough away from the water
course that flooding would not be a
problem.
Wolffork valley is
a wide valley and a second mill was constructed on
the far side (what is now Blue Ridge Gap
Road). Both of these mills were utilized by
the farmers in the valley well into the 20th
century.
The waterfall was
given the name Sylvan Lake Falls in the mid 20th
century when some enterprising gentlemen bought the
mountain side and decided to create a vacation
community. They dug out the field above the
falls and erected a dam. The stream that fed
the newly created lake was named Greasy Creek and
was not an appealing name sake for the new
development and lake. The gentlemen decided on
the name Sylvan Lake from the middle English word
meaning "of the woods." After the
lake was named, the falls were then named, and the
mill took on the name Sylvan Falls Mill.
Sylvan Falls Mill
continues to sell grits and meal to the local
population as well as the students and faculty at
the Rabun Gap Nacoochee School. There were a
few years in the 1970's when the mill stopped
grinding, but it resumed operations in the
1980's. 2008 marks the 168th anniversary of
Sylvan Falls Mill and we are proud to bring you a
selection of premium organic grains.
|
|
Grains: We start with fresh
organically grown grains from nearby farms. Our
products are ground between two granite stones encased in
a Meadows Mill
that is powered by a 27 foot Fitz Water Wheel. The
water wheel is propelled by a sluice that diverts water
from the falls. To ensure that our products are
always as fresh as possible we grind in small batches and
refrigerate immediately after bagging.
|
|
Corn: At this time we have
yellow corn meal available in two pound
bags. Our meal is finely ground. We do take
special orders for our grits.
Our yellow corn comes from just up the road in
North Carolina and is sweet and full of flavor.
When available we also carry white corn grits and
meal. Our white corn is a heritage kernel that dates
from the 1700's and has not been modified. It is
naturally pest and drought resistant and has a sweet scent
and flavor.
|
|
Wheat: We receive our wheat
from North Carolina as well. It is a red winter
wheat and is perfect for all types of baking.
|
|
Rye: The rye berries that
we grind are full of flavor and are perfect for robust
black breads and pumpernickel loaves.
|
|
Coffee: We serve premium
fresh roasted coffees. Our friends at Baby's Coffee
in Key West provide us with a blend of coffee that is full
bodied and aromatic. You can order your Baby's
Coffee straight from the source, or you can purchase 1
pound bags of whole beans from us.
|
|
Soap: All natural vegetable
products and pure oils make our soaps unparalleled.

crate that is perfect for gift giving or keeping. The
