Mill Tour

Welcome to Our Milling Video. This short video is designed to give you an overview of milling process employed at Sylvan Falls Mill.  We continue the art of grinding that has been practiced here since 1840.  We employ an overshot wheel as our power source, a canvas belt transfers the energy from the wheel outside to the "burr mill" inside the building.  The speed of the grinding  is controlled by a series of adjustments made to the amount of water going over the wheel, the amount of grain going into the mill and the set of the stones.  The end product is bagged and refrigerated to maintain freshness. In a typical week we grind corn, wheat, and rye into flour, meal and grits.

If you are interested in coming by and taking a tour or having a demonstration please call us and we will be happy to accommodate your group. Call 706-746-7138 and ask for Mike or Linda.

A view of the inner workings of the mill.  Pictured is the granite stone that is mounted to the axel.  Each stone is 24 inches in diameter and weighs over 200 pounds.

A view of the falls taken from the mid point.  You can clearly see the metal flume that sends the water over the wheel to make it turn. A view of the falls taken from the base.  About 50% of the falls are visible in this picture.  The falls start at the dam at the head of Sylvan Lake.
