Meet the author for dinner at Sylvan Falls Mill B & B
Start the Father’s Day weekend off right at Sylvan Falls Mill Historical Bed & Breakfast with dinner and a book talk with local author Joseph Gatins, 7-10 p.m., Friday, June 18.
Gatins will discuss and read from an engaging, non-fiction family biography, We Were Dancing on a Volcano: Bloodlines and Fault Lines of a Star-Crossed Atlanta Family, 1849-1989, which recaptures the adventures and misadventures of a pioneer family that figured prominently Atlanta’s origins as a little railroad junction and, later, as the capital of the New South. Signed copies of the book, offering an often-fascinating glimpse into these worlds, will be available for sale this weekend.
The book also traces five generations of a family at war, from the Civil War to the Vietnam War.

and how a series of colorful men – and most remarkable women – coped with and survived the conflicts. This no-holds-barred biography focuses particularly on his father’s multiple escapes from German POW camps in World War II, culminating in a final, successful escape only made possible by the unflagging help of his mother, who worked closely with the French Resistance in Paris. The author is a retired newspaperman who uncovered a treasure trove of archival information and photos that bring his family historys to life.
Guests that evening will be greeted with a hearty, gourmet dinner prepared by the inn’s co-owner and chef, Linda Johnson. Local residents who intend to attend the dinner and book talk should call 706-746-7138 or contact us at: Linda3010@windstream.net for reservations ($30 per person, dinner and talk.) Space is limited so book early.
